I don't know why literates are not talking about this sham habit. I just hate this culture where people buy books just to place them on their shelves in the name of "collection", they buy books to add to their pile or shelves in order to brag about it in a boastful manner to others. These people buy books without any intention of reading them, THEY JUST LITERALLY COLLECT THEM! and they treat this so called "habit" as something to be proud of. In fact, publishers and certain bookstagram vloggers promote or support this culture and why not? after all they both are earning profits from it.
It is a Tsundoku Culture. The term 'tsundoku' is derived from two Japanese words tsunde-oku (to pile things up) and dokusho (reading books). Therefore, it means to collect books in order to pile them up without any intention of actually reading them. Collecting some exceptionally rare editions of books or original manuscripts, so as to preserve them, is something else and absolutely fantastic I must agree.
However, to generally buy books not with the love of reading them but just to flaunt that "I have a collection of books" is absolutely disgusting. Can we please stop this? and can we please not support or encourage people who follow this Tsundoku Culture?
I am an author myself and obviously I would be sad if people wouldn't buy my book but it would make me even sadder to realize that some people buy it just to place them on a shelf to eat dust and not actually reading it. So please buy books only when you want to read them and not to just have a collection to impress people.
