I got some mails where people were asking "How can I publish my book?", "Can you suggest me some companies?", "What's the procedure?", "How much does it cost?", Is there any company to publish for free?", "Traditional or self-publishing, which is better?". So in this post we're gonna discuss that. Many blogs and websites post regarding this, but here I'll provide you this info in simple and as easy as possible manner.
So first of all, How can I publish my book? / What's the procedure?
You have to make sure that your manuscript is completely ready. Don't rush in the beginning itself in finding a publishing company when your manuscript is not ready to publish, because they're not going to wait once they accept your proposal. After your manuscript is ready, decide you wanna publish it traditionally or by yourself? i.e. self-publishing. Now which is better and which is not? we'll come to that soon. Well, I would recommend you traditional publishing coz there you get a nice royalty of your book and the cost for publishing is almost "0". However, go through the companies you have decided to send your proposal to. Follow their submission guidelines and send sample chapters to them. Remember, avoid sending your entire manuscript in first time only, as it's not only risky that your manuscript might get damage or that someone might steal your story; but also shows a bad image of you to the publisher. Send first 3 sample chapters (if it's a prose) or 5 sample poetries (if it's a poetry book). Also, make all your documents ready before you send your proposal because traditional publishers do ask documents like synopsis, author bio, cover letter/ query letter or as given in the guidelines because every publishing agency has it's own guidelines. So most importantly, do read the guidelines carefully and then submit your manuscript. And above all, be patient. Wait till they respond.
Traditional vs Self-Publishing?
There's no good or bad way of publishing. You can opt for either both or any one of them (traditional or self-publishing). Now, what traditional publishing is? So when you send your manuscript to an established and renowned publishing house for selection of your manuscript i.e. whether they liked your proposal or not, should they go further with your book printing or not?, where professional experts take care of your book; from cover designing to sales and marketing everything is managed by them, then it is traditional publishing. For instance : Penguin, HarperCollins, Westland publishers, APK publishers. Whereas, self publishing is when you pay to a publishing house to get your book published and everything from cover designing to book editing, marketing and all, everything is managed by you; it's called self-publishing. So there's a big amount of money you need to spend to hype your book. Because after all the strategy you adopt for it's marketing and sales is what that matters the most to make your book a success. Well, traditional publishing is what you should try getting hard because of course that is much profitable to newly published authors. However, self-publishing is also doing great nowadays as we can see everything depends on the hype, promotion, marketing & sales of your book; both of them have their own pros and cons.
Now, How Much It Cost?
When you are publishing traditionally your money will be entirely spend on the promotion & marketing of book and whatever % your company agrees to publish you, it will deduct that amount from your total book sales automatically and of course once they accept your proposal, you'll be published for free.
Unlike this, when you self-publish your book you need to spend a lot of money on editing, cover designing, marketing, sales, promotion and everything else. So yes it can be expensive for many authors as compared to traditional publishing. But still if you have a true talent and once your work is hyped you can earn a lot.
